The rules in short
April 4, 2022 was the opening day of Ontario's regulated online gambling market. The body that conducts and manages it is iGaming Ontario. The AGCO regulates it.
Two conditions must both be met before a private online casino can operate legally in Ontario. First, the AGCO must register the operator. Next, the operator must have an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. Sites that have both appear in iGaming Ontario's directory of regulated sites at igamingontario.ca.
OLG.ca is not a private site: it is the online casino of OLG, the provincial agency. For any site, the same two limits apply to you. Play is open to you only at 19 or older, and only while you are actually located in Ontario. A player from Owen Sound on a trip outside the province cannot play on an Ontario site from there.
Opting out: BetGuard and My PlayBreak
BetGuard, found at betguard.ca, is a self-exclusion tool, meaning you ask to be kept away from gambling sites for a set period. Since May 14, 2026, iGaming Ontario has been running it. One request covers OLG.ca and every other online gambling site regulated in Ontario. Length options are 6 months, 5 years, 1 year or a custom period, meaning one you set.
Land-based casinos, such as the one in Hanover, are not covered by BetGuard. Those casinos come under OLG's My PlayBreak, where a break lasts 1 to 5 years, or 3 months or 6 months. Once a casino break begins, no Ontario casino lets you in, and there is no way to stop it before the term is over. To join, reach the OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098, speak with staff on site, or drop by a PlaySmart Centre.
How this guide is paid
Hanover Casino Tally keeps no player accounts and handles no wagers. Its paid links are counted on a single page, the home page, where each wears an Ad tag. There are three: in the menu, under the opening screen, and down by the footer. Each opens the same private online casino, which pays this guide by commission.
Only adults who are physically in Ontario may use those links. The partner, never named anywhere in the guide, is not OLG.ca and may be swapped. Playtime Casino Hanover, Gateway Casinos, Hanover Raceway, OLG, iGaming Ontario and the AGCO have nothing to do with it. Anyone can check an online operator in iGaming Ontario's directory at igamingontario.ca.
Short answers
- Can you legally play at online casinos in Ontario?
- Yes, provided it is a regulated site. The AGCO must register a private online casino, and iGaming Ontario must sign an operating agreement with it, before it is legal. OLG.ca belongs to the provincial agency itself.
- How old must a player be?
- You must be 19 or older. Your location counts too, since you must be in Ontario in person during play.
- Does BetGuard cover the casino in Hanover?
- No, it only reaches the regulated online gambling sites of Ontario, OLG.ca among them. Land-based casinos, including the one in Hanover, fall under OLG's My PlayBreak.
- Why do Ad-marked links appear on the home page?
- That is how the guide is paid. Behind every link is one partner, a private online casino, and the guide earns commission from it. You find them only on the home page, and no bets are taken by the guide.
